Tuesday 23 May 2017

Cardiff Council has been awarded £3.9 million against a total project cost of £7.8 million to build a new build 420 Welsh medium primary school with 80 Nursery places on Lewis Road, Splott (Maltings Park).
Education Secretary Kirsty Williams said:

“The demand for Welsh medium education in Cardiff has increased significantly in recent years and it’s great that we have the 21st Century Schools and Education programme that allows us to respond in a planned way to that growth.

“I’m eager to ensure that children within communities across the county, wherever they live, have access to the best possible educational resources. Children in this area of Cardiff will benefit from a modern Welsh-medium teaching environment as well as a new outdoor play and educational area.

“It’s not only the pupils and teachers who’ll benefit from this new development, but the wider so will the wider community, as this is a major construction scheme creating employment and providing opportunities for local suppliers.”

Greens suspend campaigning / Leader's statement

23 May 2017

*Jonathan Bartley: “Our country will never be divided by terror

The Green Party has suspended campaigning today after last night’s terrorist attack in Manchester.

All national campaigning events, including the billboard launch and Welsh Green Party manifesto launch are cancelled.

In a statement following the attacks, the Green Party co-leader Jonathan Bartley said:

“Our thoughts are with those affected by this appalling incident in Manchester. For young people to be targeted in this way is utterly atrocious.

“As ever our emergency services have done us proud – and we pay tribute to the police, firefighters and paramadics who stepped up in this time of need.

“Our country will never be divided by terror. The people of Manchester showed last night just how strong the bond of friendship is between the people who live on these islands – and in the coming days and weeks we’ll show that we won’t let terrorism tear us apart.”

News story: CMA issues provisional decision in relation to drug firm’s pricing

The CMA has today issued a statement of objections to the pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme Limited (MSD).

This sets out the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) provisional decision that MSD operated an anti-competitive discount scheme for its medicine Remicade. Remicade is the brand name for MSD’s version of a biological medicine called infliximab, which is used primarily in the treatment of patients with gastroenterology and rheumatology conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The CMA has provisionally found that MSD broke competition law by abusing its dominant position through a discount scheme for Remicade that was likely to restrict competition from ‘biosimilar’ versions of infliximab that were new to the market.

At this stage of the CMA’s investigation, these findings are provisional and no conclusion should be drawn that there has in fact been any breach of competition law. The CMA will carefully consider any representations by the company under investigation before determining whether the law has been infringed.

The CMA proposes to find MSD and its ultimate parent company Merck & Co., Inc. jointly and severally liable for the alleged infringement. The CMA opened this investigation in December 2015.

Below are comments from Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson following last night’s terrorist attack in Manchester.

“This is devastating news and all my prayers go out today to the families of those who were killed and injured.

“I can only imagine the pain they are feeling and their heartbreak is shared across the country.

“It goes without saying that our political campaigning will cease today.

“Terrorism has once again struck our country and, once again, we are faced with a sense of disbelief that someone could be capable of carrying out such an appalling act.

“We will stand with the people of Manchester.

“We also all know that this wonderful vibrant city will not be defeated by this terrorist act.

“The courageous work of our emergency services and the generosity and help offered by ordinary people after the attack are the values that define us.

“We have faced down terror before, and we will do so again.”
