HK reaches for the moon

     Led by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the Government’s Hong Kong Space Robotics and Energy Centre under the InnoHK Research Clusters is playing a major role in the country’s Chang’E-8 mission by developing a multifunctional lunar surface robot as part of an international collaboration project.
      
     News.gov.hk spoke to the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Professor Sun Dong, about how the centre will help enhance Hong Kong’s global competitiveness in the aerospace industry, while the HKUST’s Director of the Space Science and Technology Institute, Professor Yu Hongyu, explained the key features of the lunar surface robot.

HKETO, Brussels supports “Fashion Hong Kong Pop-Up Store in Milan” (with photos)

     The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels (HKETO, Brussels) sponsors the “Fashion Hong Kong Pop-Up Store in Milan” (Pop-Up Store) organised by the Hong Kong Trade and Development Council in Milan, Italy from March 7 to 30 (Milan time) as part of the Fashion Hong Kong series.

     At the opening of the Pop-Up Store on March 13 (Milan time), the Special Representative for Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs to the European Union, Ms Shirley Yung, said “The Pop-Up Store represents an exciting opportunity to experience the creative vitality of Hong Kong’s fashion scene, offering a glimpse into Hong Kong’s unique design through a carefully curated selection of fashion, accessories, jewelry, and lifestyle products by talented Hong Kong designers.”

     Ms Yung highlighted this initiative as part of ongoing promotion efforts aimed at strengthening the connection between Hong Kong’s creative talent and the vibrant Italian fashion scene. She said “While Hong Kong aspires to be the world’s East-meets-West center for international cultural exchange, our true strength lies in our designers and artists. Their ambition, creativity, and dedication shine through their work, reinforcing Hong Kong’s reputation as a global creative hub.” Ms Yung also reaffirmed the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s commitment to supporting the dynamic and vibrant creative sector, and strengthening its ties with Italy in various areas, including arts, culture, and business. 

     Alongside the fashion items by the Hong Kong designers, HKETO, Brussels also supports the participation of Crafts on Peel, a charitable organisation in Hong Kong, in the Pop-Up Store featuring four impressive and delicate artworks. These artworks reinterpret traditional Hong Kong craftsmanship through contemporary design, reflecting another important aspect of Hong Kong’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. 

     Since its inception in 2015, Fashion Hong Kong has actively participated in prestigious fashion weeks and international events across major cities, providing a unique platform to showcase Hong Kong’s innovative and diverse design aesthetics.

“A Visual Voyage: Hong Kong and Scenes Hong Kong Comics x Movie Exhibition” being held in Seoul (with photos)

     The Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) Comix Home Base is now staging “A Visual Voyage: Hong Kong and Scenes Hong Kong Comics x Movie Exhibition” at the Insa Art Centre in Seoul, Korea. The exhibition began March 8 and runs until March 30, and is supported by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Tokyo). 

     Blending comics, movies, and augmented reality animation, the exhibition showcases Hong Kong’s unique urban culture through various visual approaches for a wider international audience, featuring drawings by Hong Kong comics artist Kwan-ho Cheung, Hong Kong illustrator Pearl Law, as well as Korean illustrator Kyutae Lee. It aims to promote Hong Kong culture and tourism through Hong Kong movies, comics and illustrations, fostering cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Korea through the exhibition and encouraging interdisciplinary dialogue between visual arts and film cultures.

     Speaking at the exhibition’s cocktail reception today (March 15), the Principal Hong Kong Economic and Trade Representative (Tokyo), Miss Winsome Au, welcomed the return of the HKAC to Korea since its last exhibition in Seoul in 2021. 

     “Over the past years, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has been proactively developing the arts, culture and creative industries, while making every effort to enhance publicity about Hong Kong overseas. The Chief Executive announced in his 2024 Policy Address that we will develop Hong Kong into a premier tourism destination through innovative thinking and making better use of our rich and unique resources. These elements, combined with our edges in technology, animation and comics, the performing arts, film and television culture, and more, will help to instil the concept of ‘tourism is everywhere in Hong Kong’,” Miss Au said.

     She added that the exhibition provides a valuable platform for Korean audiences to appreciate the unique culture of Hong Kong and also looked forward to more exchanges and collaborations in arts and culture between Hong Kong and Korea.

     Admission to the exhibition is free, and is open from 10am to 7pm until March 30 at Exhibition Hall 6 at the Insa Arts Centre, Seoul, Korea. To mark the occasion, a series of spin-off events featuring the artists from Hong Kong and Korea is being held March 15 and 16, including a live drawing art jam by Hong Kong illustrator Pearl Law and Korean artist Zipcy, a special talk on “City of Darkness: Crossover and Adaptation” by the author of “City of Darkness”, Yu Yi, and editor-in-chief of Cineplay Sungchul Joo, and a comics and zine-making workshop by Pearl Law. Sick person in custody dies in public hospital

     â€‹A sick 44-year-old female person in custody at Lo Wu Correctional Institution died in a public hospital today (March 15).
      
     The person in custody suffered from heart disease. She required continuous medical care and follow-up at a public hospital. On March 14, she was sent to a public hospital for treatment due to physical discomfort. During hospitalisation, her condition deteriorated and she was certified dead at 3.27pm today.
      
     The case has been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner’s Court.
      
     The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of theft in March 2025. read more
