The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) announces a sentinel event today (January 20):
A 68-year-old male patient with leukaemia attended Accident and Emergency Department on December 24, 2020 due to shortness of breath and fever. He was then admitted to a medical ward in QEH. The patient was in stable mood with no abnormality was observed upon clinical assessment since his admission. Appropriate treatment had been provided.
When a doctor reviewed the clinical condition of the patient at 3.30pm today, the patient was found to have a number of stab wounds on his neck and body. Healthcare staff immediately helped stop bleeding but the condition of the patient deteriorated. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed immediately and patient’s family members were informed. The patient was certified dead at 4.40pm. The hospital has already reported the case to the police.
QEH is deeply saddened by the incident and expresses condolences to the family members, and will offer necessary assistance. The incident has also been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office via the Advance Incident Reporting System. A root cause analysis panel will be set up to look into the incident. The investigation report will be submitted in eight weeks. The case has been referred to the coroner for follow-up.
