The Education Bureau (EDB) issued a circular memorandum to all kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools (including special schools) today (September 19) to encourage active participation from teachers, students and parents in the "Warm Stitches, Grateful Hearts" Parent-child Crochet Activity organised by the EDB.

The spokesman for the EDB said, "The activity aims to inspire parents to cultivate the virtue of compassion and helpfulness in their children, and encourage them to express gratitude in action. We appeal for the support from schools to unite parents and encourage them to make crochet squares with their children with a caring and grateful heart. The EDB will collect the crochet squares from schools in Hong Kong, all of which will be stitched into scarves as gifts for the elderly residing in care homes or living alone, serving to convey warm wishes and promote the culture of harmony across generations."

The activity comprises three Groups, namely Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary. Participating parents and students should enrol in the activity and submit their crochet squares through their respective schools between September 26 and November 10. Schools should register and enrol parent and student participants on the activity website (www.parent.edu.hk/en/article/crochet-challenge2023) during the period and deliver all the crochet squares collected to the collection point no later than November 15. Each participant submitting the crochet squares will receive a certificate of commendation and a souvenir.

To recognise schools with the highest number of crochet squares collected and encourage active participation of the participants, the following awards and prizes for each Group will be presented:

Award Prize
The Most Active Participation Award (Schools)
The top five schools submitting the highest number of crochet squares that fulfil the specified requirements

The EDB will conduct an interview and video shooting with the champion school of the Most Active Participation Award in each Group and the videos will be uploaded to the EDB website and the Smart Parent Net or its social media platforms.

The activity is jointly supported by the Committee on Home-School Co-operation, Hong Kong Island School Heads Association, Kowloon Region School Heads Association and New Territories School Heads Association.

In addition, to equip parents or students who are interested in this activity with basic crochet techniques, the EDB will organise four crochet workshops in October. Those interested in joining the workshops can sign up on the activity website (www.parent.edu.hk/en/article/crochet-challenge2023) from September 26. Participants may also learn basic crochet techniques by viewing the demonstration videos on the activity website.

The objective is to foster a positive mindset among parents, with a view to helping their children learn effectively and grow happily.
