Inspection of aquatic products imported from Japan

In response to the Japanese Government’s plan to discharge nuclear-contaminated water at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Station, the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene issued a Food Safety Order which prohibits all aquatic products, sea salt and seaweeds originating from the 10 metropolis/prefectures, namely Tokyo, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Miyagi, Chiba, Gunma, Tochigi, Niigata, Nagano and Saitama, from being imported into and supplied in Hong Kong.

For other Japanese aquatic products, sea salt and seaweeds that are not prohibited from being imported into Hong Kong, the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department is conducting comprehensive radiological tests to verify that the radiation levels of these products do not exceed the guideline levels before they are allowed to be supplied in the market.

From noon on October 23 to noon today (October 26), the CFS conducted tests on the radiological levels of 408 food samples imported from Japan, which were of the “aquatic and related products, seaweeds and sea salt” category. No sample was found to have exceeded the safety limit. Details can be found on the CFS’s thematic website titled “Control Measures on Foods Imported from Japan” (www.cfs.gov.hk/english/programme/programme_rafs/programme_rafs_fc_01_30_Nuclear_Event_and_Food_Safety.html).

In parallel, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has also tested 150 samples of local catch for radiological levels. All the samples passed the tests. Details can be found on the AFCD’s website (www.afcd.gov.hk/english/fisheries/Radiological_testing/Radiological_Test.html).

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has also enhanced the environmental monitoring of the local waters. No anomaly has been detected so far. For details, please refer to the HKO’s website (www.hko.gov.hk/en/radiation/monitoring/seawater.html).

From August 24, 2023, to noon today, the CFS and the AFCD have conducted tests on the radiological levels of 270 359 samples of food imported from Japan (including 168 341 samples of aquatic and related products, seaweeds and sea salt) and 57 610 samples of local catch respectively. All the samples passed the tests. read more

Special traffic and transport arrangements for Northern Metropolis Marathon on November 1

The Transport Department (TD) today (October 26) reminded members of the public and visitors that temporary road closures will be implemented in phases on various road sections in Shek Mun, Lung Shan Tunnel (northbound) and Fanling Bypass (southbound) from 2am on Sunday (November 1) to facilitate the Northern Metropolis Marathon 2026.

Affected road sections to reopen in phases by around 3pm

The three major events of the Northern Metropolis Marathon (namely the marathon, half-marathon and 10km race) will start at Shek Mun, Hong Kong Science Park and Fanling Bypass respectively, and all will finish at Fanling Bypass. Subject to the arrangements and progress of the events, it is estimated that On Lai Street and its vicinity in Shek Mun will be reopened at 8am, the Lung Shan Tunnel (northbound) will be reopened by around 11am and the Fanling Bypass (southbound) will be reopened by around 3pm.

Public transport arrangements

During road closures, seven franchised bus routes (Citybus routes Nos. B7, B8, 79, 79X and KMB routes Nos. B9, B9A and 78S) and two green minibus routes (routes Nos. 67A and 811A) will be affected and subject to route diversion, truncation, or service suspension until the reopening of roads. Additionally, to facilitate the event, the first departures for the MTR East Rail Line (between Hung Hom Station and Sheung Shui Station) and the Tuen Ma Line (between Tai Wai Station and Wu Kai Sha Station) will be advanced on November 1, with the first departure on the East Rail Line (Hung Hom Station to Sheung Shui Station) to be operated at 4.20am.

Traffic arrangements

Due to the closure of Lung Shan Tunnel (northbound), motorists travelling from Fanling Highway to the Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point and Sha Tau Kok will be diverted via Sha Tau Kok Road (Lung Yeuk Tau and Ma Mei Ha sections). During the road closure period, the Fanling Highway Bus-Bus Interchange next to the slip road entrance of Lung Shan Tunnel (northbound) will also be temporarily closed until the reopening of Lung Shan Tunnel (northbound) at 11am. Lung Shan Tunnel (southbound) will remain in normal operation.

Due to the closure of Fanling Bypass (southbound), motorists travelling from North District town centre to Kowloon will be diverted via Jockey Club Road. Fanling Bypass (northbound) will remain in normal operation.

Plan journeys early

The TD appeals to the public to pay attention to the temporary road closures and public transport service adjustments on that day. Members of the public are advised to plan their routes early, use railway services and allow more travelling time to avoid any delays. Members of the public heading for the Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point are advised to plan their journey early to avoid any delay caused by road closures and traffic diversions. Motorists are advised to avoid driving to the affected areas.

The TD and the Police will closely monitor the traffic situation. Other temporary road and traffic control measures, including adjusting the extent of road closures and alteration or suspension of public transport services, may be implemented by the Police at short notice depending on the actual traffic conditions. Members of the public and visitors should heed the latest traffic news via the TD’s website (www.td.gov.hk), HKeMobility mobile app and radio and TV broadcasts, or relevant public transport operators’ websites or mobile apps for details of service adjustments. read more
