In response to the Japanese Government’s plan to discharge nuclear-contaminated water at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Station, the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene issued a Food Safety Order which prohibits all aquatic products, sea salt and seaweeds originating from the 10 metropolis/prefectures, namely Tokyo, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Miyagi, Chiba, Gunma, Tochigi, Niigata, Nagano and Saitama, from being imported into and supplied in Hong Kong.
For other Japanese aquatic products, sea salt and seaweeds that are not prohibited from being imported into Hong Kong, the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department is conducting comprehensive radiological tests to verify that the radiation levels of these products do not exceed the guideline levels before they are allowed to be supplied in the market.
From noon on October 16 to noon today (October 20), the CFS conducted tests on the radiological levels of 386 food samples imported from Japan, which were of the “aquatic and related products, seaweeds and sea salt” category. No sample was found to have exceeded the safety limit. In parallel, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has also tested 200 samples of local catch for radiological levels. All the samples passed the tests. The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has also enhanced the environmental monitoring of the local waters. No anomaly has been detected so far. For details, please refer to the HKO’s website (www.hko.gov.hk/en/radiation/monitoring/seawater.html).
From August 24, 2023, to noon today, the CFS and the AFCD have conducted tests on the radiological levels of 268 787 samples of food imported from Japan (including 167 355 samples of aquatic and related products, seaweeds and sea salt) and 57 310 samples of local catch respectively. The Hospital Authority (HA) today (October 20) extends its heartfelt gratitude to Sino Group and Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation for their generous donation of a combined total of $30 million to support the establishment of two operating theatres dedicated to cataract surgery. The theatres are expected to come into service in the fourth quarter of next year, in support of the Government’s and the HA’s commitment to advancing cataract treatment services and enabling more patients in need to receive appropriate treatment at an earlier stage.
In accordance with the policy direction set out in the Chief Executive’s 2026 Policy Address, upon the relocation of Queen Elizabeth Hospital to Kai Tak, the HA will develop Hong Kong’s first integrated ambulatory care hospital at King’s Park, anchored by a high-volume day cataract surgery centre alongside other day medical services. The cataract surgery centre is expected to come into service in the fourth quarter of next year, providing approximately 5 500 cataract surgeries annually. This will further enhance cataract treatment service capabilities and help shorten patients’ waiting times.
The HA Chairman, Mr Henry Fan, said, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sino Group and Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation for their generous donation. The HA will make good use of the donation to establish two operating theatres dedicated to cataract surgery at the existing site of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Ambulatory Care Centre, with construction works having commenced in August this year. Upon the commissioning of the operating theatres, high-volume day cataract surgery services will be provided, significantly increasing cataract surgical capacity. The HA will also strengthen the manpower and resources dedicated to cataract treatment services, shorten patients’ waiting times and enhance treatment outcomes for the benefit of patients.”
Director of Philanthropy of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation Ms Nikki Ng said, “Having good vision is crucial to one’s quality of life. We strongly support the Government’s and the HA’s efforts to enhance cataract treatment services and are honoured to contribute to this meaningful initiative. Through the development of the related facilities and services, we hope to help more people access timely treatment and support the ongoing development of eye health services in Hong Kong. We look forward to the early commissioning of the two dedicated cataract surgery theatres, enabling more patients to regain clear vision and go about their daily lives with greater ease. To express its appreciation to Sino Group and Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation for their generous support, the HA earlier held a ceremony at the HA Building, where Mr Fan and the Chief Executive of the HA, Dr Libby Lee, presented certificates of appreciation to Ms Ng and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation Mr David Ng.
