At the close of polling at 10.30pm today (March 24), 2 495 of the 7 257 registered electors of the Tai Nan Constituency had cast their votes in the Yau Tsim Mong District Council by-election, representing a turnout of 34.38 per cent. (The voter turnout figures are only for temporary reference.)
The polling station at the Fresh Fish Traders’ School opened from 7.30am to 10.30pm.
The dedicated polling station at Cheung Sha Wan Police Station also opened from 7.30am to 10.30pm. It was set up for electors in the Tai Nan Constituency remanded or detained by law enforcement agencies other than the Correctional Services Department (CSD) to cast their ballots.
Three dedicated polling stations were also set up at penal institutions for electors in the constituency who are imprisoned or remanded in the CSD’s custody to cast their votes at their respective penal institutions. For security reasons, the polling hours were from 9am to 4pm. read more
Hong Kong Customs seized about 2.1 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine and 6.5 kilograms of suspected cocaine with an estimated market value of about $8.24 million at Hong Kong International Airport on March 16 and yesterday (March 23) respectively.
Customs officers inspected an air mail parcel from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on March 16 and found the batch of suspected methamphetamine concealed in four sets of children puzzle play mat in the parcel.
After follow-up investigation, Customs officers yesterday (March 23) arrested one man suspected to be in connection with the case in Cheung Sha Wan.
The arrested man, aged 40, has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts tomorrow (March 25).
Also, a 33-year-old male passenger arrived in Hong Kong from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia yesterday. During Customs clearance, the batch of suspected cocaine was found concealed inside the front and rear covers of six books placed in his suitcase. The man was then arrested. Investigation is ongoing.
Customs will maintain close contact with Hong Kong Post and the logistics industries to step up action against drug trafficking through postal parcel or express courier channels.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (March 24) reported the latest developments in its investigations into a measles case and reminded the public again that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles.
The case concerned was announced yesterday which involved a 41-year-old man working for an airline. A CHP spokesman said that, upon notification of the case, the CHP immediately commenced epidemiological investigations and conducted relevant contact tracing. Initial investigations revealed that no contact has shown measles-related symptoms so far. No high risks contacts such as immunocompromised persons, young children aged below one and pregnant women are identified among the contacts.
