Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected cocaine (with photo)

Hong Kong Customs seized about 5.9 kilograms of suspected cocaine with an estimated market value of about $7.6 million at the Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (August 24).

A male passenger arrived in Hong Kong from Taiwan yesterday morning. During customs clearance, the suspected cocaine was found being concealed inside six photo albums. The man was then arrested.

The arrested man, aged 22, has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts tomorrow (August 26).

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.

Members of the public may report any suspected drug trafficking activities to Customs’ 24-hour hotline 2545 6182 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account (crimereport@customs.gov.hk).

CE congratulates Chief Executive (Elect) of Macao SAR

The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today (August 25) congratulated Mr Ho Iat-seng on his election as the fifth-term Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).

“Mr Ho has been committed to serving Macao and making significant contributions. In addition to his active participation in such areas of social services as education and culture, he has served in a number of important offices since the establishment of the Macao SAR, including as the President of the fifth- and sixth-term of the Legislative Assembly. With Mr Ho’s devotion to social services and wealth of experience in public offices, he will certainly lead Macao to scale new heights.

“As the country’s SARs, both Hong Kong and Macao enjoy the advantages of “One Country, Two Systems”. The two places have close ties and have fostered deep bonds between the people. The opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge last year has remarkably shortened the distance between the two cities. Playing important roles in the country’s reform and opening up, Hong Kong and Macao as core cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development can complement each other, contributing to the Bay Area and bringing about better life for the people in the two places. I look forward to working closely with Mr Ho in the future to advance together the development of the two places,” Mrs Lam said. read more
