Update on cluster of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus cases in Tuen Mun Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carriers in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the spokesperson for Tuen Mun Hospital gave the following update today (May 23):

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed enhanced surveillance and two more baby girls (9 days old and 29 months old) were confirmed as MRSA carriers without clinical symptoms. One patient was in serious condition due to her underlying disease. She was hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation. Another patient has been discharged earlier.

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the ward. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
