Thirty-nine citizens who helped the Police fight crime were commended at the Good Citizen Award (GCA) Presentation Ceremony today (March 20).
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Police Director of Operations, Mr Siu Chak-yee, commended the GCA recipients for their courage, alertness and willingness to help.
Mr Siu pointed out that the initiative of the GCA echoed with one of the strategies of the Police’s newly launched three-year strategic directions plan, namely “Policing with the Community”. He added that the Force would continue to raise public awareness of fighting crime together.
Mr Siu also said the Force would promote exchanges with the community through different social media platforms to enhance the public’s understanding of police work and gain their support and trust.
Also officiating at the ceremony, Mr Lam Kin-hong, a member of the Fight Crime Committee, said that the continuous decline in crime figures in recent years was a result of long-term mutual trust and co-operation between the Police and the community. He hoped the public would continue to help Police fight crime to maintain the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong. Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, Ms Shirley Yuen, praised the GCA recipients as role models for citizens at the ceremony.
With the help of the awardees, 40 persons were arrested for a variety of offences including trafficking in dangerous drugs, theft, rape and wounding.
Mr Won Wai-man, recipient of the Good Citizen of the Year Award (GCYA), is a primary school teacher of General Studies. He set up a mail box at school to enhance communication with students. He received an anonymous note from a student who claimed to be molested. Mr Won swiftly identified the victim and reported the case to the Police. The culprit was finally convicted of rape and was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment.
The youngest awardee, Ms Ng Mo-ping, aged 15, helped intercepting and subduing a man who had stolen passengers’ properties on a Mass Transit Railway train. The man was convicted of theft and attempted theft. He was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment.
Presented twice a year, the Good Citizen Award is organised by the Police Public Relations Branch, sponsored by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and supported by the Fight Crime Committee. Each of the awardees receives a certificate and a cheque of $3,000. The GCYA recipient would also be presented with a plaque and a cheque of $4,000. Since 1973, more than 4,000 persons have been commended over the years.
