     The online voting of the 2016-2020 Top 10 Mind-boggling Weather and Climate Events Selection organised by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) started today (January 28).
      
     In recent years, extreme weather conditions such as intense cold surges, scorching high temperatures, super typhoons and torrential rain have affected Hong Kong and various parts of the world. Meanwhile, melting ice in polar regions and rising sea levels have led to widespread concern on issues related to climate change across the world. Extreme weather events may cause severe damage to the ecological environment and even loss of life. Through the voting activity, the HKO hopes to arouse the public’s attention to significant weather and climate events in Hong Kong and around the world and enhance their understanding on climate change and its impacts on human lives.
      
     The voting activity began online today, with participants able to select five weather and climate events from the shortlist in each of the two given categories, namely “Hong Kong” and “Worldwide”, that they consider the most significant or impactful or the most representative in the climate crisis. Participants of the voting activity may have a chance to get an HKO souvenir.
      
     The website of the 2016-2020 Top 10 Mind-boggling Weather and Climate Events Selection is eforms.weather.gov.hk/selection/intro.fm. The voting period will end on February 28. Voting results will be announced in late March.

     The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department today (January 28) announced an adjustment to the auto-LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) ceiling prices for dedicated LPG filling stations from February 1 to February 28, 2021, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the contracts of the dedicated LPG filling stations.
 
     A department spokesman said that the adjustment on February 1, 2021, reflects the movement of the LPG international price in January 2021 and the movement in the Composite Consumer Price Index in 2020. The overall adjusted auto-LPG ceiling prices for dedicated LPG filling stations will range from $3.41 to $3.97 per litre, representing an increase of $0.34 per litre.
 
     The spokesman said that the auto-LPG ceiling prices were adjusted according to a specified pricing formula. The formula comprises two elements – the LPG international price and the LPG operating price. The LPG international price is the LPG international price of the preceding month. The LPG operating price is adjusted on the first day of February every year according to the movement in the Composite Consumer Price Index in the previous year. According to the information from the Census and Statistics Department, the year-on-year rate of change in the Composite Consumer Price Index for 2020 was +0.3 per cent. The LPG operating prices of dedicated filling stations also increased according to this rate by not more than $0.01 per litre.

     The spokesman said that the details of the LPG international price and the auto-LPG ceiling price of each dedicated LPG filling station have been uploaded to the department website www.emsd.gov.hk. They are also posted at dedicated LPG filling stations to enable the trades to monitor the price adjustment.
