Secretary for Health and delegation continue visit in Shanghai (with photos)

     The Secretary for Health, Professor Lo Chung-mau, and his delegation continued their visit in Shanghai today (June 10), calling on Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University and exchanging views with Hong Kong people living in Shanghai.

     Under the arrangement of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai, the delegation met with Hong Kong people living in Shanghai for lunch to understand more about their daily lives in Shanghai. The delegation then proceeded to visit Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University where they met with its President, Dr Fan Jia, and its Director of Cardiology Department, Dr Ge Junbo, and learned about the high quality work of the hospital. The delegation also visited the Center for Interventional Cardiology of Zhongshan Hospital and toured the set-up for a smart hospital there.

     Professor Lo told Dr Fan, “Hong Kong has been driving the development of ‘smart healthcare’ with the support and facilitation of the Hospital Authority (HA). Over the years, the HA has been striving to usher in innovative technology to enhance public healthcare services, and at the same time exploring and implementing different systems to support the development of a smart hospital. Smart hospital and ‘smart healthcare’ will be the future strategic goals of profound significance for increasing the healthcare efficiency and achieving a sustainable development of healthcare services.”

     In meeting with Dr Ge, Professor Lo pointed out, “The Mainland has been pressing ahead with the adoption of a systematic approach in all Chest Pain Centers at full speed since 2016 by launching various accreditation works. Dr Ge has been sparing no effort in the setting up of standardised Chest Pain Centers across the country, and formulating of a co-ordinated system and standard of treatment for chest pain, thereby largely reducing the duration for treatment and taking the country’s treatment for acute myocardial infarction to a higher level. Such achievements are valuable reference for Hong Kong.”

     The delegation will attend the China Organ Donation Day event to be held in Shanghai tomorrow (June 11), before returning to Hong Kong in the evening.

Over 3 800 blood donors commended at Annual Donor Award Ceremony (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) today (June 10) held its Annual Donor Award Ceremony to commend outstanding blood donors. BTS also announced that a total of 3 855 donors gave blood 25-times or in its multiples in 2022/23, which was a BTS record. BTS thanks all donors for their enthusiasm in contributing to a sustainable blood supply for the city.

     The officiating guests at the award presentation included the Acting Secretary for Health, Dr Libby Lee; the Chairman of the Hospital Authority (HA), Mr Henry Fan; the President of the Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC), Mr George Joseph Ho; Deputy Chairperson of HKRC Ms Wendy Tsang; the Chairman of BTS Governing Committee, Mr Ignatius Chan; the Chief Executive of HA, Dr Tony Ko, and the Cluster Chief Executive of the Kowloon Central Cluster, Dr Eric Cheung.

     In her opening remarks, Dr Lee pointed out that there’s no substitute for blood, and the shelf life of blood is limited. BTS needs regular blood donations by the public in order to ensure a sufficient and stable blood supply for the city. She said she hoped the spirit of mutual support and care would spread across the society and added that the Government would continue to give its full support to blood donation.

     Mr Fan reiterated that a sustainable and stable blood supply is an integral part of the health system. He also expressed his deep gratitude to all blood donors on behalf of HA. He also presented awards to representatives from awarded schools to commend their efforts and commitment in promoting blood donation to the younger generation.

     Ms Tsang called on the public to support World Blood Donor Day on June 14. There is no substitute for blood despite advances in medical technology, she added. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure all patients have access to safe blood in time for clinical treatments.

     With strong support from the community, 123 823 donors came forward and donated 210 532 units of blood, turning into over 330 000 units of blood products for clinical treatment this year. They have brought warmth, hope and light to patients and their families.

CHP reminds public on precautions against heat stroke during very hot weather

     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) today (June 10) reminded members of the public, particularly those undertaking outdoor activities, to take heed of necessary measures against heat stroke and sunburn in very hot weather.

     “The public should carry and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration while engaging in outdoor activities,” a spokesman for the CHP said.

     “Those engaged in strenuous outdoor activities should avoid beverages containing caffeine, such as coffee and tea, as well as alcohol, as they speed up water loss through the urinary system,” the spokesman explained.

     “Children, the elderly, the obese and those with chronic illnesses, such as heart disease or high blood pressure, are more vulnerable to heat stroke. They should pay special attention,” the spokesman added.

     The public should adopt the following precautions:

  • Wear loose and light-coloured clothing to reduce heat absorption and facilitate sweat evaporation and heat dissipation;
  • Avoid vigorous exercise and prolonged activities like hiking or trekking as heat, sweating and exhaustion can place additional demands on the physique;
  • Perform outdoor activities in the morning or the late afternoon;
  • For indoor activities, open all windows, use a fan or use air-conditioning to maintain good ventilation;
  • Do not stay inside a parked vehicle; and
  • Reschedule work to cooler times of the day. If working in a hot environment is inevitable, introduce shade in the workplace where practicable. Start work slowly and pick up the pace gradually. Move to a cool area for rest at regular intervals to allow the body to recuperate.

     â€‹The public should also note the latest and the forecast Ultraviolet (UV) Index released by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO). When the UV Index is high (6 or above):

  • Minimise direct exposure of the skin and the eyes to sunlight;
  • Wear long-sleeved and loose-fitting clothes;
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat or use an umbrella;
  • Seek a shaded area or put on UV-blocking sunglasses;
  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen lotion with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or above. Apply liberally and reapply after swimming, sweating or towelling off; and
  • While using DEET-containing insect repellents for personal protection against mosquito-borne diseases, apply sunscreen first, then insect repellent.

    If symptoms develop, such as dizziness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath or confusion, rest and seek help immediately, and seek medical advice as soon as possible.

     â€‹The public may obtain more information from the DH’s Health Education Infoline (2833 0111), heat stroke page and UV radiation page; the HKO’s Dial-a-Weather (1878 200), latest weather report and forecast, UV Index and weather information for hiking and mountaineering; and press releases of the Labour Department on precautions against heat stroke for outdoor workers and their employers when the Very Hot Weather Warning is in force. read more
