Remand person in custody commits suicide by hanging at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre

     A 49-year-old male remand person in custody at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre committed suicide by hanging yesterday (September 24).

     At 10.04pm yesterday, a correctional officer discovered the person in custody had committed suicide by hanging with a bedsheet tied to the grille bars of his cell. The officer immediately called for reinforcement. Upon arrival, reinforcement staff immediately provided first aid treatment and called for an ambulance. The person in custody was then sent to a public hospital for rescue. He was subsequently certified dead at 10.08am today (September 25).

     The Correctional Services Department has reported the case to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.

     The deceased was remanded for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
