LegCo Subcommittee on Matters Relating to the Development of Smart City visits Hong Kong International Airport (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The Legislative Council (LegCo) Subcommittee on Matters Relating to the Development of Smart City visited the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) today (August 8) to understand the latest development of smart airport initiatives implemented by the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA), such as the 5G mobile network infrastructure, autonomous driving technology and electric vehicle-sharing programme, for improving the operation efficiency of the HKIA and providing more convenient services to the passengers.
 
     Accompanied by representatives of the AA, Members first overlooked the airport from the balcony of the HKIA Tower and received a briefing by the Chief Executive Officer of the AA, Mr Fred Lam, on the latest development of the HKIA. Members then visited the "Flight Token" facilities at Terminal 1 including Smart Check-in Kiosks, Self-Bag Drop Counters, e-Security Gates and e-Boarding Gates. They learnt about the AA's initiatives in applying technological innovations, such as touchless devices and biometric token to speed up the passengers' boarding procedures.

     Members also visited the Sky Bridge, which connects Terminal 1 and the North Satellite Concourse, to understand the green design of the HKIA and latest measures taken by the AA to promote sustainable development.

     Meanwhile, Members observed the autonomous baggage tractor and restricted area patrol car that have already been in operation. Representatives of the AA also briefed Members on the introduction of autonomous bus that will start carrying airport staff in the restricted area on a trial basis, and the plan of extending the application of autonomous transport system to carry passengers.
 
     A total of five members and six non-members of the Subcommittee on Matters Relating to the Development of Smart City attended the visit.
