The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The Hospital Authority (HA) welcomes the appointment of Mr Henry Fan as the new Chairman of the HA with effect from December 1, 2019, which was announced by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today (September 12).

Mr Fan, with his wealth of experience and professional knowledge in corporate management, has been serving on a number of public organisations to contribute his strategic advice, including the Chief Executive's Council of Advisers on Innovation and Strategic Development, the Board of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority and the Financial Services Development Council. Mr Fan was appointed as a member of the HA Board last year and has been serving in various functional committees, namely the Finance Committee, the Human Resources Committee, the Medical Services Development Committee and the Main Tender Board. Mr Fan was also appointed as a member of Hospital Governing Committee of Kwai Chung Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital in April this year.

The HA Chief Executive, Dr Tony Ko, said that he and all HA staff will fully support and work together with the HA Board led by the new Chairman to help Hong Kong people stay healthy, and contribute to the continuous development of public healthcare services to address the increasing service demand and community expectations, amid the challenges of an ageing population, advancement in medical technology and manpower shortages.

"I believe Mr Fan, with his wealth of management and corporate governance experience in different areas, will bring new perspectives and impetus to the HA to overcome the challenges ahead and continue to enhance the public healthcare services of Hong Kong," he said.

Dr Ko also expressed heartfelt appreciation to Professor John Leong Chi-yan for his significant contribution in leading the HA in the past six years.

"Professor Leong is highly respected both in the medical and academic fields. With his admirable professional knowledge and rich experience in medical and academic administration, he has steered the future development of public hospitals with distinct foresight. He is also particularly keen to drive for the professional development and training of healthcare staff, and measures to retain and augment manpower," Dr Ko remarked.

"Under the leadership of Professor Leong, the HA has strived to manage the service demand pressure of public hospitals arising from the ageing population and outbreaks of various infectious diseases. In the past few years, consolidation and development of services for enhanced efficiency, completion and commissioning of various new hospitals; and the ongoing 10-year hospital development programme have laid a solid foundation for us to face the challenges ahead."
