Hong Kong Customs yesterday (September 20) seized 510 suspected smuggled smart phones with an estimated market value of about $4.1 million at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) Hong Kong Port.
Customs officers intercepted an outgoing private car at the HZMB Hong Kong Port for inspection yesterday afternoon and found the batch of smart phones inside the compartment of the vehicle. The 43-year-old male driver was arrested.
The arrested male driver has been charged with one count of attempting to export unmanifested cargo. He will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts on September 27.
Smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
