Update on cluster of parainfluenza virus cases at Kwai Chung Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of patients infected with Parainfluenza Virus Type 3 in a female psychiatric ward, the spokesperson for Kwai Chung Hospital gave the following update today (November 18):

     According to contact tracing by an infection control team of the hospital, a discharged patient (aged 84) of the ward presented with respiratory symptoms on November 14 and was admitted to a Princess Margaret Hospital medical ward on November 16. Appropriate viral testing was arranged for the patient and the test result was positive for Parainfluenza Virus Type 3. The patient concerned has been discharged today.

     Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the wards are under close surveillance.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
