Temporary closure of Croydon Magistrates’ Court from September 2019

Ministry of Justice building

The enabling works required need to be completed before we move additional court business into Croydon as part of wider work to make the best use of the most suitable buildings in the court estate, including the closure of Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court.

We have been working with contractors on what needs to be done to the Croydon Magistrates’ Court building to enable it to accommodate this extra work. The most recent and detailed reports have shown that more work is needed than was originally anticipated and will need the installation of site hoarding and internal scaffolding in the public concourse. As this would create too much disruption we will temporarily close the court for a few months while the work is carried out.

While the court is temporarily closed:

  • Criminal cases will be heard in Camberwell, Wimbledon and Lavender Hill
  • Family cases will be heard at Wandsworth County Court.

November 2019 update

We have been working closely with the contractor and following completion of the works our plan is to implement a phased return of work into Croydon. This will help us facilitate both the listing of work that was temporarily moved out of Croydon, as well as the work currently listed at Camberwell Green. The phases for work to return to Croydon are:

  • Week commencing 20 January 2020 (all adult trials)
  • Week commencing 27 January 2020 (guilty advised plea and not guilty advised plea cases, family and youth work)
  • Week commencing 3 March 2020 (all custody cases and non- Crown Prosecution Service cases).
