Responding to reports that Andy Burnham has been briefed that the US-Iran war is entering a dangerous new phase, with President Trump believed to be serious about threats to bomb Iranian civilian infrastructure, and following overnight reports that US strikes have already hit civilian infrastructure in Iran, Green Party MP Ellie Chowns said:

“Greens have warned since the outset of the illegal US-Israeli war on Iran that every step of military escalation makes a spiralling regional conflict more likely, puts more civilians at risk and pushes a diplomatic solution further out of reach.

“Overnight, there were reports that US strikes hit civilian infrastructure in Iran, just days after President Trump publicly threatened to target bridges and power plants. That is a deeply alarming and dangerous trajectory.

“The incoming Prime Minister must unequivocally oppose this reckless war and use every available diplomatic lever to secure a peaceful resolution.”
