ExCo Non-official Members visit West Kowloon Cultural District (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Executive Council Secretariat:

Non-official Members of the Executive Council (ExCo Non-official Members) today (June 3) visited the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) to learn about its latest developments.

Upon arrival, the ExCo Non-official Members were briefed by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA), Mrs Betty Fung, on the facilities of the WKCD. Accompanied by the Chairman of the Board of the WKCDA, Mr Henry Tang; Mrs Fung; the Museum Director of M+, Ms Suhanya Raffel; the Museum Director of the Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM), Dr Louis Ng; and the Executive Director of Performing Arts of the WKCDA, Mr Paul Tam, the ExCo Non-official Members toured the M+ museum and were introduced to the design and architectural features of the M+ building. The M+ museum is the first global museum of contemporary visual culture in Asia. The construction of the museum building has been completed and the installation of internal fittings and fixtures is now under way, including the installation of the M+ Collection. The museum is set to open at the end of this year.

The ExCo Non-official Members then visited the construction site of the HKPM to learn about progress of the works. The HKPM, which is scheduled to open in mid-2022, is a collaborative project between the WKCDA and the Palace Museum with the capital cost being fully funded by a donation of $3.5 billion from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Lastly, the ExCo Non-official Members visited the Xiqu Centre and enjoyed a short performance at the Tea House Theatre to gain first-hand experience of the performance programmes of the Xiqu Centre. The Xiqu Centre is a world-class performance venue with a wide range of facilities, such as a Grand Theatre with more than 1,000 seats, a Seminar Hall and a number of studios.

The ExCo Non-official Members gladly noted that the construction works of the WKCD were making good progress and that the museums featured a distinct collection and curatorial style. With the M+ museum and the HKPM opening in phases, the ExCo Non-official Members were keenly awaiting the two world-class museums to become new landmarks for culture, arts and tourism in Hong Kong as well as a leisure and entertainment hot spot for members of the public. Together with the expanded Hong Kong Museum of Art, these new facilities would turn a new page in the development of arts and culture in Hong Kong, strengthening the position of Hong Kong as an international arts and cultural hub.

The ExCo Non-official Members joining the visit today were Convenor Mr Bernard Chan, Mr Arthur Li, Mr Chow Chung-kong, Mr Ip Kwok-him, Mr Ronny Tong and Dr Lam Ching-choi.

Government announces additional fourth cycle designated quarantine hotels

â€‹The Government announced today (June 3) two additional designated quarantine hotels for the fourth cycle of the Designated Quarantine Hotel Scheme. Along with the 31 hotels announced on May 20, there will be a total of 33 hotels in the fourth cycle, providing about 9 000 rooms, with the contract period running from June 20 to August 31.

The Government may, in response to demand, adjust the number of hotel rooms to be provided in the fourth cycle of the Scheme. Together with the blocked off rooms available at some hotels, the number of rooms that can be provided in the fourth cycle will exceed 11 000.

A Government spokesman said, "In view of the recent surge in demand for designated quarantine hotels, the Government has decided to further increase the supply of quarantine hotel rooms in the fourth cycle. Apart from liaising with those fourth cycle quarantine hotels announced earlier to release their blocked off rooms for booking, the Government has also secured the addition of two more designated hotels. We trust that these measures will help meet the demand of travellers to Hong Kong. The Government will continue to monitor the situation and decide on further appropriate adjustment and arrangements as necessary.

"After approaching those suitable hotels that responded to our earlier invitation to join the fourth cycle but were not selected to ascertain their continued interest to join the Scheme, we have secured the addition of two more hotels to the fourth cycle. These two additional hotels will provide a further 500 rooms for booking by travellers to Hong Kong."

The updated list of designated hotels in the fourth cycle (see Annex) and related details, including room rates, will be uploaded to the thematic webpage at www.designatedhotel.gov.hk.

Secretary for Food and Health approves lowering age limit for receiving Comirnaty vaccine

The Secretary for Food and Health (SFH) today (June 3) approved the lowering of the age limit for receiving the Comirnaty vaccine to age 12.

The Department of Health has submitted to the Advisory Panel on COVID-19 Vaccines (Advisory Panel) earlier the application for lowering the age limit for receiving the Comirnaty vaccine to age 12, along with the relevant clinical trial data for consideration. After scrutinising the relevant information, the Advisory Panel advised the SFH to approve the application concerned.

Having regard to the advice of the Advisory Panel, and having considered the threat to public health posed by COVID-19, the SFH considered that the benefits of lowering the age limit for receiving the Comirnaty vaccine outweigh the risks. Not only can it protect adolescents from COVID-19 infection, it can also enable them to resume normal school and daily life as soon as possible.

The relevant arrangements for providing the Comirnaty vaccine to adolescents aged 12 to 15 will be announced early next week.
