Owing to the thunderstorm warning, the flag-raising ceremony scheduled to be conducted at Golden Bauhinia Square, Wan Chai at 8am today (June 5) was cancelled.

     A spokesman for the Security Bureau (SB) strongly opposes the unfounded and false accusations made by the National Taiwan University Graduate Students Association against the Police's law enforcement actions on June 4. The SB condemns the organisation for disregarding the facts, confusing right and wrong, and attempting to shift the focus by smearing the lawful actions of the Police.

     The spokesman seriously reiterated that all law enforcement actions taken by law enforcement agencies are based on evidence, strictly according to the law and for the acts of the people or organisations concerned, and have nothing to do with their political stance or background. Hong Kong is governed by the rule of law where laws must be observed and lawbreakers will be held to account in accordance with the law. No one is above the law.

     Hong Kong residents enjoy the rights and freedoms under the Basic Law, the Hong Kong Bill of Rights Ordinance and other relevant laws. The Hong Kong National Security Law clearly stipulates that human rights shall be respected and protected in safeguarding national security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the rights and freedoms that Hong Kong residents enjoy under the Basic Law, and the provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights as applied to Hong Kong, including the freedom of speech, shall be protected in accordance with the law. However, members of the public must abide by the law, not affect social order, and maintain national security when exercising these freedoms.

     Police today (June 4) laid a holding charge against a 39-year-old man with two counts of murder. 

     The man was arrested on June 2 in suspected connection with a murder happened in Wong Tai Sin, in which a 22-year-old woman and a 26-year-old woman died.
 
     The case will be mentioned at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (June 5) morning.

     The Hong Kong Cup dragon boat race was held at the promenade of Yamashita Park in Yokohama, Japan, today (June 4). The championship went to Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association, which beat 14 other teams in the race. The Hong Kong Cup trophy was presented by the Principal Hong Kong Economic and Trade Representative (Tokyo), Miss Winsome Au.

     The Yokohama Dragon Boat Races, which have been held since 1994, attracted about 130 teams this year to compete in a four-day event spread across two consecutive weekends. The Hong Kong Cup race, sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Tokyo (Tokyo ETO), was one of the highlights.

     The Tokyo ETO also set up a booth at the race venue to introduce Hong Kong to park visitors and race spectators, encouraging them to visit Hong Kong to experience for themselves the vibrancy of the city, and providing them with latest developments on various talent admission schemes. The Tokyo ETO aims to promote cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Japan as well as enhance Japanese people's understanding of Hong Kong through participating in the event.

        

     â€‹The Home Affairs Department will continue to open 19 community halls/community centres as temporary heat shelters today (June 4).
 
     The temporary heat shelters will remain open for people to take refuge from the heat when the Very Hot Weather Warning is in force. From 10.30pm to 8am the next day, the temporary heat shelters will also provide bedding and a sleeping place for people in need. The shelters are manned by duty attendants.
