China releases 4 suspected Japanese spies

Chinese authorities said that four of the six Japanese citizens detained in March for “illegal activities” had been released.

Two others are still being held on accusations of stealing China’s classified information.

The six Japanese, either employed by Japan’s NC Geophysical Survey Corporation or Dalian-based He Yuan Hot Spring Development Consultant Company, were found to have conducted illegal surveying activities in east China’s Shandong Province and south China’s Hainan Province in March, without any official registration, qualification or permit.

The two still under investigation are the heads of the two companies.

Investigations show that the two companies had conducted illegal surveys in China more than 30 times in the past 10 years.

Investigators have discovered classified materials on the suspects’ laptops, USB drives and other devices, including more than 80 maps.

124 people arrested for cross-border telecom fraud

A total of 124 suspects, including seven Taiwan residents, have been arrested in southwest China’s Sichuan Province and Cambodia for cross-border telecom fraud.

In February, major telecom fraud cases were reported to police in Sichuan. Suspects, disguised as court or police officials, claimed that the victims’ bank accounts had been breached, inducing them to transfer their money to a so-called “safe account” in panic.

After investigation, police located the gang’s den in Cambodia.

Eighteen people were first arrested in an April raid in Sichuan. Another 74 people were captured on July 1 by Chinese and Cambodian police during raids on several locations in Phnom Penh. Cambodia deported the suspects to China on July 6.

On July 17, another 32 suspects, including seven Taiwan residents, were caught in similar telecom fraud cases in Cambodia. A large number of mobile phones and laptops were seized during the crackdowns. Seventeen of the 32 suspects were sent to China by Cambodian authorities on Thursday.

Defense ministry film celebrates PLA’s founding <img src=”http://www.clipartbest.com/cliparts/9c4/eqz/9c4eqzBcE.png” width=”15″/>

China’s Defense Ministry released a new video in a bid to showcase the country’s rising military capabilities two weeks ahead of the 90th birthday of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

The video, named “PLA Today,” is China’s latest bid to show the world how far its military capacity has increased since its inception nine decades ago, and also how far it would go to preserve the country’s hard-won peace and order.

The 16-minute English-language video, with Chinese subtitles, displayed a host of unmanned “smart” military vehicles, reconnaissance robots and drones, followed by footage of live-fire drills in the South China Sea and the East China Sea in July last year.

The video also sought to reaffirm the PLA’s commitment to “safeguarding world peace and regional security,” by highlighting its efforts in conducting UN peacekeeping tasks and escort missions around the Gulf of Aden, with footage of crew members from foreign ships saying “Thank you China” after being rescued by Chinese forces.

“Peace is a core value of the Chinese civilization,” the video said, “China pursues a national defense policy that is defensive in nature.”

The video has aroused patriotism online.
