Labour Department investigates fatal work accident in Hung Hom

     The Labour Department (LD) is investigating a fatal work accident that occurred in Hung Hom this afternoon (November 10), in which a man died.

     The LD immediately deployed staff to the scene upon receiving a report of the accident, and is now conducting an investigation to look into its cause.




Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected methamphetamine (with photo)

     Hong Kong Customs seized about 3.6 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine with an estimated market value of about $1.7 million at Hong Kong International Airport on November 8.

     Customs officers inspected an air mail parcel from Laos on November 8 and found the batch of suspected methamphetamine concealed in six books.

     After follow-up investigation, Customs officers yesterday (November 9) arrested a woman suspected to be in connection with the case in Wong Tai Sin.

     The arrested woman, aged 40, has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. She will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts on November 12.

     Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.

CE leads delegation to Shenzhen in celebration of 40th anniversary of country’s reform and opening up (with photos/videos)

     The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, led a delegation comprising over 160 members to visit Shenzhen today (November 10) to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening up of the country. They visited the Shenzhen Reform and Opening-up Exhibition Hall as well as the Qianhai Exhibition Hall and the Qianhai Stone Park.

     The delegation comprises members of various sectors of the community who have made profound contributions to the reform and opening up of the country and to Hong Kong, with the Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mr Wang Zhimin, as the advisor. The Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan; the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau; the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Patrick Nip; and the Director of the Chief Executive's Office, Mr Chan Kwok-ki, also joined the visit.

     In the morning, Mrs Lam and members of the delegation departed for the Shenzhen Reform and Opening-up Exhibition Hall by land transport to view the "Great Tides Surge Along the Pearl River – 40 Years of Reform and Opening-up in Guangdong" exhibition to learn the rise of Shenzhen and the development of its surrounding areas as well as the history, remarkable achievements and valuable experiences of Guangdong's reform and opening up.

     Mrs Lam and members of the delegation then attended a lunch hosted by the Shenzhen Municipal Government. In her speech at the lunch, she said that Hong Kong and Shenzhen have been in close co-operation in the past 40 years at various levels and in different areas covering commerce, investment, trade, logistics, professional services, arts and culture and youth development. She added that Hong Kong, which is still the largest source of external investment in Shenzhen and has close to 60 000 enterprises there, has been making significant contributions to the development of Shenzhen. She expressed the hope that Hong Kong and Shenzhen will further enhance collaboration in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the establishment of the international innovation and technology centre and complement each other, taking their co-operation to new heights.

     Later, Mrs Lam and members of the delegation visited the Qianhai Exhibition Hall to understand Qianhai's past development and future planning. They also paid a visit to the Qianhai Stone Park where President Xi Jinping delivered an important speech in 2012 calling for the continuation of reform and opening up, and he visited it to see the changes in the development of Qianhai during his inspection tour in Qianhai in October this year.

     Mrs Lam and members of the delegation departed Shenzhen in the afternoon and will start their visit to Beijing tomorrow (November 11).

Hong Kong Exhibition Area at China International Import Expo well-received (with photos)

     The inaugural China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai concluded today (November 10) with the Hong Kong Exhibition Area set up by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government receiving overwhelming response from visitors from all over the world, effectively promoting Hong Kong's role as a strategic gateway and important hub connecting China to the world.
 
     Themed "Hong Kong In", the Hong Kong Exhibition Area was located inside the China Pavilion of the Country Pavilion for Trade and Investment. Rich in content, the exhibition introduced Hong Kong's strengths, major infrastructure projects, popular tourist attractions, and innovation and technology products and inventions. The visitors could also learn about Hong Kong's participation in the Belt and Road Initiative and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development, its contributions to the reform and opening up of the country, and the implementation of "one country, two systems" and the Basic Law.
 
     With the use of various multimedia technologies, such as a transparent projection touch screen, mixed reality, holograms, 3D mapping, an interactive magic book and a naked eye 3D display, visitors could view the exhibition content in an interactive way.
 
     To showcase Hong Kong's unique diversified culture, "Daily Highlights" performances, including a harmonica ensemble, an a cappella group, Chinese-Western music crossover, Cantonese opera excerpts and fashion shows, were performed by various youth art groups, artists and organisations at the Hong Kong Exhibition Area, giving visitors a taste of Hong Kong's glamour from different perspectives.
 
     Meanwhile, more than 160 Hong Kong enterprises took part in the Enterprise and Business Exhibition. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council set up a Hong Kong Services Zone and a Hong Kong Product Zone to exhibit a wide array of quality products and services to international exhibitors and buyers.

Fatal traffic accident in Sau Mau Ping

     Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in Sau Mau Ping today (November 10) in which a 56-year-old woman died.

     At about 1.32pm, a private car driven by a 49-year-old man was travelling along Sau Mau Ping Road towards Shun Lee Estate. When approaching Sau Ming Road, it reportedly knocked down the 56-year-old woman who was crossing the road.

     Sustaining serious head injuries, the woman was rushed to United Christian Hospital in unconscious state and was certified dead at 2pm.

     The private car driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death and is being detained for further enquiries.

     Investigation by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, Kowloon East is underway.
