Red flags hoisted at several beaches

     Here is an item of interest to swimmers.

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (September 3) that due to big waves, red flags have been hoisted at Stanley Main Beach, Turtle Cove Beach, Shek O Beach and Big Wave Bay Beach in Southern District, Hong Kong Island; Upper Cheung Sha Beach, Lower Cheung Sha Beach and Tong Fuk Beach in Islands District; and Silverstrand Beach, Clear Water Bay First Beach and Clear Water Bay Second Beach in Sai Kung District. Beach-goers are advised not to swim at these beaches.




Applications for Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships and Scholarships for Overseas Studies 2020/21

The following is issued on behalf of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council:

     The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council reminded interested applicants today (September 3) that its Fellowships and Scholarships for Overseas Studies (including the award for students with disabilities) for the academic year 2020/21 have been accepting applications since July 2. The closing date for all applications is September 16, 2019.
 
     The fellowships and scholarships aim at encouraging outstanding students to pursue further studies in reputable institutions overseas. Successful candidates for the awards are expected to have a strong sense of commitment to Hong Kong and be ready to contribute significantly to the community upon graduation.

     The fellowships are for studies leading to postgraduate degrees either by research or by coursework; the scholarships are for studies leading to undergraduate degrees.
      
     The applicants will be responsible for fulfilling all application procedures and admission requirements of the academic institutions of their choice.
 
     The maximum value of a fellowship is HK$300,000 per year, tenable for up to three years for a doctoral degree or two years for a master's degree. The maximum value of a scholarship is HK$280,000 per year, tenable for up to three years.

     For Fellowships and Scholarships for Overseas Studies, short-listed applicants will be invited to attend interviews in person in Hong Kong. The first round of interviews is scheduled for January 2020. If found suitable, applicants will be invited for a final interview to be held around February/March 2020. Applicants short-listed for the Overseas Fellowship/Scholarship for Disabled Students will be invited to attend one round of interview in person in Hong Kong around February/March 2020.




Pending murder in Sai Kung

     Police are investigating a pending murder case in Sai Kung yesterday morning (September 2) in which a 21-year-old woman died.

     At about 7.35am, Police received a report from a 50-year-old man that his 21-year-old daughter collapsed inside a village house on Lung Mei Tsuen Road.

     Police officers sped to the scene and found the 21-year-old woman sustaining multiple injuries and lying unconsciously on a bed. She was certified dead at scene.

     Initial investigation revealed that the 50-year-old father, his 52-year-old wife, his 49-year-old male friend and his 29-year-old female friend were suspected to have assaulted the deceased with hands, plastic rackets and a pair of slippers. They were arrested for murder and are being detained for further enquiries.

     A pair of slippers and three plastic rackets in suspected connection with the case were seized at scene.

     Post-mortem examinations will be conducted later to ascertain the cause of death of the deceased.

     Investigation by the Crime Unit of Wong Tai Sin District is underway.
     




Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected cocaine (with photo)

     â€‹Hong Kong Customs yesterday (September 1) seized about 2.7 kilograms of suspected cocaine with an estimated market value of about $3.5 million at Hong Kong International Airport. 

     A male passenger yesterday arrived in Hong Kong from Sao Paulo, Brazil via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. During Customs clearance, two towels soaked with suspected cocaine were found concealed inside his luggage. The man was then arrested. 

     The arrested man, aged 49, has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (September 3). 

     Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.

Special traffic arrangements on Hong Kong Island

     Police will implement special traffic arrangements tomorrow (September 3) to facilitate a public order event to be held on Hong Kong Island.

Road closure
————

     The layby on westbound Lung Wo Road outside Hong Kong City Hall will be suspended until 1pm.

     The following roads will be closed from 5.30am to 11am:

–  The northern section of Edinburgh Place; and
–  The western kerbside lane of the eastern section of Edinburgh Place.

Traffic diversions
——————

     Traffic along the eastern section of northbound Edinburgh Place cannot turn left to the northern section of westbound Edinburgh Place from 5.30am to 11am.

     Actual implementation of the traffic arrangements will be made depending on traffic and crowd conditions in the area. Motorists are advised to exercise tolerance and patience and take heed of instructions of the Police on site.
