Purdah restrictions

As the BGS is an arm’s length body of government, we face restrictions on communicating during the pre-election period and are not able to provide media comment at this time. Normal service will be resumed after the General Election when a new government has been formed.




Passive seismic monitoring

In 2012 the BGS acquired a modern passive seismic measurement unit (Tromino) to complement the existing suite of near-surface geophysical equipment.




Scheduled network maintenance | 22-23 April

This weekend a major upgrade to network services at our Keyworth office is taking place. Most web and information services will remain available throughout the duration of the work but there may be short interruptions to services at any time during Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 April. The services subject to possible interruption include the main website, the online shop, all our hosted sites such as OneGeology, all our webservices and some mobile app functionality.




21st Century Exploration Roadmap Palaeozoic Project released for underexplored petroleum systems

The British Geological Survey (BGS) and the UK Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) are pleased to announce the release of the 21st Century Exploration Roadmap (21CXRM) Palaeozoic Project, aiming to improve the knowledge and data from the underexplored Palaeozoic petroleum systems of the North Sea and Greater Irish Sea.




The Centre for Environmental Geochemistry secure £450,000 funding for research on the Red River Delta, Vietnam

A new £450,000 research project investigating sustainable water management on the Red River Delta in Vietnam has recently been awarded UK and Vietnamese Collaborators under the Newton funding Scheme. The project will involve collaborators from the School of Geography at the University of Nottingham (in UK and Malaysia), British Geological Survey and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) in Hanoi.
