AL-MUKALLA: Armed Houthis on Monday raided a community radio station that airs music and other programs in Sanaa for the second time and looted broadcast equipment, ignoring a judicial ruling that allowed the radio to resume operations.

Majili Al-Samadi, head of Voice of Yemen radio, said on Facebook that armed men forced their way into his office and seized equipment, despite a verdict from the Specialized Press and Publications Court ordering the Houthis to allow him to resume broadcasting.

4 Arab cities listed among world’s best

Mon, 2022-07-11 20:56

LONDON: Marrakech has been ranked seventh in a new list of the world’s 53 best cities, compiled by British events magazine Time Out.

Dubai (40), Abu Dhabi (45) and Doha (53) were the other Arab cities receiving plaudits for their offerings in nightlife, liveability, and practical issues such as walkability and sustainability.

The magazine’s annual ranking this year was the first since 2019 to not revolve around resilience to the COVID-19 pandemic, instead focusing on the fun and practical frills that each city has to offer.

BRUSSELS: The family of a Belgian aid worker being held in Iran, Olivier Vandecasteele, pleaded Monday for their government to do “everything necessary” to secure his release.
“Even though he’s innocent, he has been rotting away for nearly five months in total solitary confinement,” his sister Nathalie Vandercasteele said in a video released to media.
“Today Olivier needs your support… It is unthinkable for our family that our democratic Belgium isn’t doing everything necessary to get innocent prisoners out of countries like Iran,” she said.

Festivals, guesthouses breathe life back into old Tunis

Sun, 2022-07-10 22:49

TUNIS: Children’s cries echo through the alleyways as they hunt for hidden treasure — part of growing efforts to bring life back to the Old City of Tunis.
While parts of the ninth-century medina are packed with tourists during the day, it is largely deserted at night and at the weekend.
Writer Hatem Bourial said the medina, one of the first cities built after the Muslim conquests of North Africa and home to the renowned Zitouna Mosque, has a deep “emotional charge.”
