Mother jailed in Iran for 13 years describes ‘hell’ of prison life

LONDON: A woman imprisoned in Iran since 2009 has shared a letter from inside her “hell-like” prison, it was reported on Monday.

Maryam Akbari Monfared, 47, who is a mother to three daughters, was detained more than 13 years ago on charges of supporting the People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran.

She has been separated from her children since her arrest, and her three brothers and sister were killed by the regime, the Independent reported.

Yemen coalition investigation team looks into allegations of rights violations at sites

RIYADH: The Joint Incidents Assessment Team conducted a field visit to Yemen during the past week, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday.
The inspection tour included a number of visits within the cities of Aden, Mansoura, and Abyan, where a number of sites were inspected, including the central security building in Zinjibar — a coastal town in south-central Yemen, the capital of Zinjibar District and the Abyan Governorate, and May 22 stadium in Sheikh Othman, the report said.

Cairo airport customs thwart attempt to smuggle sea snakes to UAE

CAIRO: Customs officers at the General Administration of Air Exports at Cairo Airport foiled an attempt to smuggle sea snakes to the UAE.

The seized animals were shown to the Lakes and Fish Resources Protection and Development Agency. The agency confirmed that the parcels did does not have an export approval or a CITES certificate, which regulates the trade in specimens of species.

Ahmed Abdel Mohsen El-Shahawi, director-general of the Air Exports and Imports Customs, issued a customs seizure report and notified authorities.

Yemeni forces launch final push to drive Al-Qaeda from Abyan

AL-MUKALLA: Yemeni military leaders have launched the final push to expel Al-Qaeda militants from Abyan, deploying hundreds of soldiers and armored personnel carriers as reinforcements.

The APCs, armed vehicles and support trucks were seen traveling from the city to the nearby southern province.

Brig. Mohsen Al-Wali, the general commander of Security Belt forces, said the reinforcements would boost operation “East Arrows” to battle the Al-Qaeda remnants, who are believed to be sheltering in the mountainous Al-Mahfad area.
