7 Oct 2015

As part of the Northern Territory’s October Business Month, we’re holding two special workshops to help artists, small businesses and start-ups learn about intellectual property (IP). These workshops will be presented by IP Australia and Marie Wong from Wrays – IP specialists.

How can IP help you and your business?

If you’ve got a great idea or have created a new piece of art or a design, how can you protect it so others don’t copy it? Make sure your hard work and creativity doesn’t go down the drain by protecting your work with a registered design or by establishing copyright ownership.

Maybe you’ve got a small business and want to protect your name and reputation – how can you do that? Almost every business has a trade mark of some sort – in its words, logos or slogans, or a combination.

These workshops will explain the basics behind trade mark and designs protection, and help you understand how to register your trade mark or design so you can protect it. They will also explore issues around copyright and moral rights.

What you will learn

  • what IP is and why it is important
  • what trade marks are and what can be trade marked
  • what designs can be registered
  • the difference between trade marks, designs and copyright
  • what to consider before you start sharing your great ideas or artworks with family, friends, customers or investors
  • ways to begin protecting your IP.

Who should attend

  • artists
  • small business owners
  • entrepreneurs
  • business advisors.
