Cluster of Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases in Tung Wah Eastern Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Tung Wah Eastern Hospital made the following announcement today (October 20):
 
     Three patients (aged 77 to 93) in a female ward of the Medicine and Rehabilitation Department were confirmed to have Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter since October 7. Among them, a patient had passed away on October 9 due to her underlying illness. One patient was discharged on October 19 and the remaining patient is currently hospitalised under isolation with stable condition.

     The following enhanced infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines:
 

  1. Enhanced cleaning and disinfection of wards concerned;
  2. Applied stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene for staff, patient and visitors; and
  3. Enhanced patient and environmental screening procedures.

 
     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward.
